SAWICH Held In-Depth Cooperation Talks with Ethiopian University Presidents and Official Delegation

Recently, SAWICH welcomed a distinguished delegation from afar—a high-level mission comprising presidents from multiple Ethiopian universities and colleges together with officials from Ethiopia's Ministry of Labor and Skills. The two sides held in-depth exchanges across five key areas: education and training, joint schooling, study-in-China programs, standards development, and school-enterprise cooperation, and reached consensus on the implementation pathways and outcome deliverables for the first batch of collaborative projects.

This was no ordinary visit. The joint arrival of education leaders and skills-policy makers sent a clear signal: Ethiopia is pursuing a more systematic and pragmatic approach to building a seamless chain from education to employment. This aligns closely with the "Chinese + Vocational Skills" model of international cooperation that SAWICH has long cultivated and championed.

01 A High-Level Visit: Education Leaders and Labor Authorities Join Forces

The delegation was jointly composed of presidents and experts from multiple Ethiopian universities and colleges, together with officials from Ethiopia's Ministry of Labor and Skills. One side is deeply rooted in frontline education, overseeing academic programs, faculty capacity, and graduate outcomes; the other holds authority over skills policy, occupational standards, and employment quality. Their joint arrival itself signals that this cooperation will go beyond mere inter-institutional exchanges and enter the realm of systematic alignment across "standards—training—employment."

Professor Xu Hongzhai, Chairman of SAWICH, extended a warm welcome to the delegation on behalf of the entire company. Professor Xu also serves as a professor at Hunan Agricultural University and is a nationally recognized "Outstanding" Agricultural Engineering Foreign Aid Expert certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, with long-standing dedication to China–Africa cooperation in agriculture and vocational education.

In his welcome remarks, the company noted that Ethiopia is vigorously advancing national industrialization and the strategic upgrading of its human resources. Efficient coordination between the education sector and labor authorities is key to the precise matching of skills supply with industrial demand. The company looks forward to working alongside all partners to chart clear pathways across the five cooperation areas and deliver tangible, quantifiable outcomes.

02 Five Key Areas: A Full-Chain Cooperation from Standards to Employment

At the heart of these exchanges was a shared consensus on systematic alignment across five cooperation areas. From faculty development to school-enterprise collaboration, from study-abroad services to standards export, and on to physical joint schooling initiatives, the five areas mutually reinforce one another, together forming a complete chain for China–Ethiopia education and skills cooperation.

Bilateral Education and Training: Elevating Faculty, Building Local Capacity

Focusing on professional fields urgently needed for Ethiopia's industrial development, the two sides will systematically enhance the teaching and management capacity of Ethiopian faculty through a combination of online workshops, centralized training in China, and on-site guidance by Chinese experts in Ethiopia. Efforts will also be made to localize training resources, fostering sustainable, endogenous training capacity.

School-Enterprise Cooperation: Enrollment Equals Recruitment, Graduation Equals Employment

The initiative will promote deep alignment between Ethiopian institutions and Chinese enterprises operating in Ethiopia, exploring collaborative training models such as enterprise-named classes and modern apprenticeship programs. Productive training bases will be established to realize the goal of "enrollment equals recruitment, graduation equals employment," helping Ethiopian youth secure local jobs while precisely matching the staffing needs of Chinese enterprises.

Study-in-China: One-Stop Services from Foundation Studies to Employment

Preparatory bases for study-in-China will be set up at partner institutions in Ethiopia, offering Chinese language and foundational professional courses to clear the pathway for Ethiopian students pursuing further studies in China. Targeted scholarships will be established in partnership with Chinese universities and Chinese enterprises in Ethiopia, alongside full-process services covering application, visa, studies in China, internships, and employment, supporting the growth and success of Ethiopian youth.

Standards Development: Filling National Occupational Standards Gaps in Emerging Fields

In deep cooperation with Ethiopia's Ministry of Labor and Skills, the two sides will jointly develop national occupational standards and accompanying teaching standards for emerging and high-demand fields, integrating China's vocational education experience with Ethiopia's practical needs. This will help fill standards gaps in relevant areas and support the improvement and upgrading of Ethiopia's vocational education system.

Joint Schooling: Co-Building Physical Industry Colleges and Dual-Degree Programs

The two sides will explore the co-establishment of industry colleges or dual-degree joint training programs with Ethiopian institutions. The Chinese side will provide professional standards, core curricula, training equipment, and quality assurance systems to cultivate locally rooted technical and skilled talent, while promoting mutual certification and sustainable development of educational outcomes.
